Half Way Around the word without a plane

We wish you a happy and prosperous year of the pig!

New-Year Lights in Melaka's Chinatown

Year of the pig started for the chinese on Feb, 18th , and we welcomed it the traditional way, thanks to Anabel (whom we knew from NZ) and her family

Here is a list the traditions we followed;
- Not washing our hair and cleaning the house on the 18th, as it washes money away.
- Not wearing black
- Wearing red and/or yellow
- Not eat any meat on the 18th
- Eat a lot of delicious dishes, some of which symbolise money and prosperity, on the 17th
- Eat a lot of mandarins as the words for mandarin and gold have the same pronunciation in cantonese
- Eat a special salade, called Yee San, after the whole family mixed it with shopsticks...the higher the shopticks, the better for the family's prosperity and luck...so most of the salad ends up around the dish!

Mixing the salad with Anabel's Family

- Visit the family and exchange baskets full of food such as mandarins, biscuits, abalone cans, lichors, champaign...
- Send your friends and relatives your wishes on beautifully decorated red and gold new-year post cards (I love those!)
- If you are married; give your non-maried relative a little "red packet" with some money in it.
- If you are not married; receive the red packet from your married relatives and put it under your pillow for luck, health and money.
- Go to the temple to lit some encenses, pray and brun some money for...PROS-PE-RI-TY...(everyone got that?)

We hope we've done it all correctly, so that our chinese year will be prosperous!

Wait and see February 2008 for a Chinese New-Year in China!

For now, we wish you all the best for your year of the pig! Watch your Feng Shui!
